Albany Relocation Center

Whether you're moving to Albany, New York from another state, or moving to Albany from another city within New York state, it pays to check out your mover.

First, have at least 3 movers offer you up in-home assessments so they can see they can give you an accurate estimate.

Second, watch out for a moving quote much lower than other companies - you could be getting set up for a scam. This is why it's so important to get numerous quotes, so you know what costs are "average."

Finally, after all that, check out your moving company. It's easy.

If you're moving to New York from another state, the federal government oversees your move - specifically, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Make sure the mover has a USDOT number, is registered to transport household goods between states, and has the right kind of insurance.

Check for this at www.protectyourmove.gov, where you can search for and check on potential moving companies, or call FMCSA at (202) 366-9805 for licensing and (202) 385-2423 for insurance.

If you're moving within New York - for example, from Albany to Rochester - you can check that the carrier is licensed by the Commissioner of Transportation by calling (800) 786-5368, or e-mailing the agency at nymoving@dot.state.ny.us. If moving from one part of Albany to another, try to use local Albany, New York movers. When you call to ask about Albany moving companies, make sure you have the exact name and the NYDOT number, which should be listed on the moving paperwork.
* Read all the documents you get, and keep copies of everything.
* Make sure you understand insurance options when picking a New York mover. Ask your moving company about your options.

If you need to file a damage claim, contact your mover. Movers must respond to a written claim within 30 days and resolve it in writing within 120 days. If you're not happy with the action, go to small claims court.

If you want to make a complaint against a mover, you can file a complaint with the Department of Transportation, but it can't force moving companies to pony up for damages.

Once the state receives the complaint, you will get a letter advising you how it will be handled.

To file a complaint, fill out this form and send to:
